Over half of Ghana’s labor force is engaged in agriculture. Of roughly 4 million farmers, only 9.8% have access to credit. They lack the tools, resources, and information to improve productivity and incomes. Ghanaian farmers spend up to 25% of their incomes on agricultural inputs, and poverty rates in rural areas are two to three times the national average.

Farmerline is a technology company founded by two Ghanaian entrepreneurs, Alloysius Attah and Emmanuel Addai, with a mission to create lasting profit for farmers. Farmerline provides top quality and affordable inputs on credit with flexible repayment terms and free input delivery to farmers. Each farmer is registered with a digital identity and receives critical market and location-specific weather information and training in local languages, as well as via voice for illiterate farmers. Farmerline provides its services to over 40,000 Ghanaian farmers. An impact study conducted by 60 Decibels found that 78% of customers report there are no good alternatives to Farmerline’s services.

This loan of $200,000 will be used to meet the increased demand during COVID-19 for agricultural inputs, training, and digital tools compatible with farmer’s mobile phones. This is Farmerline’s second loan through the Kiva Labs: Social Enterprise program. View their previous loan here.
