Juan from Mexico

$2050 to buy a biodigester to turn his farm waste into resources to expand his tortilla production.

Jesus plans to use a Sistema Biobolsa biodigester to eliminate wood, fossil fuels, and chemical fertilizers from his farm. He lives in Tlaxcala with six family members, including his children and wife. He supports his family with income from his 35 pigs and sheep and from his annual corn yield.

Jesus family wastes time chopping wood to burn for cooking the hand-made tortillas his family sells and for heating bathwater. He also worries about the air quality for his children and wife.

With the biodigester, he will transform his sheep and pig’s manure into renewable energy (biogas) and organic fertilizer. As he starts putting the animal waste into the biodigester, bacteria will convert it into both biogas for cooking and nutrient-rich fertilizer that Jesus will apply on his corn field.

All of this will enable him to increase his yield, eliminate the need to chop wood, and use the money he used to spend on fossil fuels and chemical fertilizer to invest in buying a truck for his farm.

With this Kiva loan, Jesus will realize his dream of making his farm economically and environmentally sustainable in order to continue the generations-old tradition of making hand made tortillas in Tlaxcala.

This loan will represent 72% of the price of the biodigester; the remaining part will be paid directly by Jesus.
