Dynamic conversion configurations
Because of the variety of handheld devices and video applications, and the complexity of setting up the conversion parameters (there are literally hundreds of them that can be tuned), we introduced in version 3.3 a new feature to make video conversion operations simpler and share best practices in this area. The idea is that the know-how of the best experts in video conversion amongst the DownloadHelper users will beneficiate to every one.
The feature covers 3 aspects:
- Naming conversion configurations: you can give names to your preferred conversion setups
- Sharing conversion configurations: by default, the most used setups are published to DownloadHelper servers
- Loading configuration easily: install a conversion configuration by simply clicking a link
Prior to DownloadHelper 3.3, when setting up video conversion, you had no other choice than either selecting a pre-set configuration from a static list of factory setups, or define your own setup through an advanced interface.
Starting from version 3.3, after you setup a smart conversion configuration, you have the capability to give it a name, so it will appear in the drop-down list so it can be easily reused.
You also have the capability to forget a configuration you defined, rename an existing configuration or revert back to the default setting.
The idea is to collect statistics about users conversion tunings, so the most used setups (hopefully the best ones) can be used by people who don't want to dig into the documentation of the hundreds ffmpeg parameters.
For the configurations to be shared, the appropriate parameter must be checked in the extension preferences.
Note that statistics are collected anonymously and only report the ffmpeg parameters to be used, the name given to the configurations and the number of times they have been used.
In order for the users to take benefit of the shared configurations, it is possible to install a configuration by simply clicking on a link from the downloadhelper server. Please visit the configurations page to access the available configurations.
